Recent research with primates shows evidence marijuana is addictive
A recent article from NewScientist.com says
that US scientists have shown that primates exhibit the same behavior
when given the active chemical from cannabis as they would if given
similar doses of morphine and cocaine. This gives us the first real
evidence to support the long debated argument of whether marijuana
smokers can become physically addicted or not.The article goes on
to state that, "proving that marijuana is addictive like cocaine
or even nicotine has been difficult." But, goes on to explain
that this is the first time that research can back those in the
rehabilitation community that have witnessed the ravages of abuse
of the seemingly "harmless drug".
The latest attempt at this research
by Steven Goldberg at the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Maryland,
gave monkeys as much THC as one would get from a single administered
dose via inhalation everytime they pressed a lever. The monkeys
got up to thirty injections of THC in one hour.
Elena Kouri of Harvard Medical
School points that the study may give addicts a ray of hope, because
for the first time ever we can tell addicts who are struggling to
quit that it is not a lack of willpower, but an actual physical
addiction that causes the propensity toward failure.
